How to properly clean a carbon steel knife?

I recently bought a Ka-Bar Kukri knife carbon steel and powder coated 1085 black epoxy. I used it for the first time today clearing shrubs and saplings, and now it's all dirty, so I want to know how to clean properly, preferably with household items. Would try to use, but only water, as carbon steel is likely to cause it to start rusting. Thanks for the help.

Wash in hot, dry very well and give it a clean with WD40 or light oil. This also works well for pruning shears.
