Finding a medal for someone who fought back when attacked by a knife wielding jerk?

I have a friend who had his throat slit, and he survived because he fought back, much to his doctor’s and the EMT’s surprise. They thought he would die from loss of blood. He’s now worried about the scars. I tell him the scars are a badge of courage, but he’s still discouraged. I’ve been all over the Web, but can’t find a medal or anything else that he could wear to show his courage. Any ideas out there?
